Abstract In Japan, superstructures are required by law to satisfy “Allowable Stress” and “Ultimate Capacity” checks, while pile systems only need to satisfy the former. As a result, pile systems may fail despite the superstructure being relatively undamaged. While detection of pile failure after an earthquake is critical to ensure that the building does not overturn during future earthquakes, it may be difficult to easily and rapidly observe such damage as piles are buried in the ground. This study examines the feasibility of using accelerometers installed in the superstructure to detect pile failure.
