This paper proposes a method to extract the hierarchical structure of plots by utilizing variant texts. There are often discrepancies between a text and variant versions in terms of the order of minor story elements. If the order of two minor story elements is A followed by B in text 1 but is reversed as B followed by A in text 2, we may assume that the elements are not sequential and have no causal relation. By applying this assumption when comparing a text and its variants, it is possible to identify the sequences of minor story elements and their relationships (whether causal or parallel). When the method is applied recursively to the resultant sequences, the hierarchical structure of plots can be extracted. By restricting the method to shared elements it is easier to analyze the main story line. The proposed method is applied to the pericopes of the four Gospels of the New Testament, yielding results that are similar to results from Biblical Studies. The hierarchical structure varies according to the combination of the Gospels, highlighting the importance of a priori knowledge in interpreting story structure.
