The purpose of this paper is to obtain the basic relationship of input signals and output signals of a neuron. This paper focuses on the fact that the net current across the membrane of a neuron over each action potential cycle must be equal to zero. This is the key of this paper, because the ion currents flowing through the membrane are directly related with the frequency of action potentials received at the synapses of the neuron (input signals of the neurons) and the frequency of the action potentials of the neuron (output signal of the neuron). Here I show, through the analysis of the currant across the membrane of a neuron, that a dynamic pulse frequency modulation (PFM) model can be obtained. This model shows that the body of a neuron plays a summation function, and scalar multiplication, integration functions are performed at the synapses.
