Carboxyl groups were successfully introduced to multi-walled carbon nanotubes by oxidn. with nitric acid or sodium hypochlorite aq. solns. under microwave irradn. The introduced functional groups were then used as a reactive terminus for introduction of long-chain alkyl groups to the surface of the nanotubes. The dispersibility in various solvents having different polarities can be controlled by this surface functionalization.
