アブストラクト Activated carbon (AC) with high surface area was successfully synthesized from Bagasse Fly Ash (BFA) by chemical activation methods. Up to now, BFA is still considered as waste materials generated by sugar cane industries. In fact, BFA has high carbon content that can be further processed to produce activated carbon. In this report, BFA was utilized to synthesize AC by chemical impregnation method with KOH in a certain weight ratio then heat treatment activation under nitrogen atmosphere to a specific temperature from 500 to 700oC. One of typical results for 550oC treated sample using 5:1 weight ratio of KOH/BFA, the result showed BET surface area of 2316 m2/g, micropore volume of 1.19 ml/g and total pore volume of 1.27 ml/g. It is shown here by under considerably low activation temperature, BFA has a great potential to be a precursor of AC synthesis in terms of surface area and pore volume compared to commercial AC of Norit® SXPlus (BET surface area of 1073 m2/g, micropore volume of 0.52ml/g and total pore volume of 0.86 ml/g).
