Aviation engines are strongly desired to reduce CO2
emission as same as other emission sources. Gas turbine
engines are bound to remain as aviation engines
in the next 20 years at least because of its high power
density. So, the jet engines definitely have to enhance
their efficiency and to reduce CO2 emission in the
worldwide trend of CO2 reduction. One of the likely
solutions is an intercooled and recuperated jet engine.
It has been confirmed by some researchers that the
overall efficiency certainly increases by employing
intercooler and recuperator. However, the increase of
weight is not acceptable as aviation engine. Therefore,
a new concept of an intercooled and recuperated jet
engine using super-critical CO2 as heat carrier is proposed
in this paper. By using super-critical CO2, the
intercooler and recuperator can be smaller and lighter
than the conventional ones. In addition, they might be
directly applied to the current jet engine because of
their smallness. In this paper, the intercooled and recuperated
jet engine based on this new concept is
roughly designed, and its performance, weight, and
feasibility are evaluated theoretically.
