The research attempted to simulate the variation in the power output of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plant, Mega-Solar power plant, caused by failures and degradation of PV modules and power conditioners over time. Specifically, Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of the four types of failures, namely “Yellowing”; “Delamination”; “Hot spot”; and “Terminal oxidation” on power output of mega-solar power plant. A computer program was developed to evaluate cost efficiencies of operation and maintenance (O&M) scenarios for a Mega-Solar power plant, i.e., PV module and power conditioner replacements. By calculating the net present values (NPV) of a hypothetical Mega-Solar power plant project under various O&M scenarios, the results of the study show that the gains/benefits of replacing PV modules and power conditioners do not outweigh the costs of doing so.
