Numerical Study on Ion Energy Transformation between Translational and Thermal Energy in Weakly Ionized Plasma Flowing Supersonically through Open Field Line
We study supersonic flow of weakly ionized plasma through an open magnetic field line. While the flows of ion and neutral are treated by particle-based Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, electron is treated as a fluid. In this report we calculate number density, velocity, temperature and electric potential of charged particles and neutrals when the arc plasma flows out into lower pressure region in a steady state. We find the translational energy and the thermal energy have correlation to conserve the total energy. We find shockwave at the end of the hollow magnets when the velocity at entrance is faster.
