アブストラクト Aluminum nitride (AlN) have known as an excellent material for insulation because of its low dielectric constant. This work studied the effect of neutron irradiation on macroscopic length, lattice parameter, microstructure and recovery behavior under isochronal annealing of AlN. AlN (Shapal, Tokuyama Soda Co. Japan) was neutron-irradiated in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) up to 4.4 x 1023 n/m2 (E > 1.0 MeV) at 300 °C  for observing the properties changes. Microstructure observation by SEM is also conducted. By measuring the macroscopic length change using a point-type micrometer at room temperature, the result shows that AlN sample was swollen by the neutron irradiation for 0.139%. After that, the specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM and were observed recovery behavior under isochronal annealing of irradiated specimen was observed by dilatometer up to 1400 °C. After annealing He gas, AlN surface was oxidized for 15 to 20 micron thickness which equal to 0.005 to 0.01 volume percentage of the sample. Its lattice parameter along a-axis and c-axis have been changed by the irradiation ,which caused swelling, for 0.16%, and 0.13% and been recovered, which were shrunk, for 0.15% and 0.19%, respectively. Moreover, the SEM images show that the particle size of unirradiated AlN are 5 to 15 micron which are smaller than the irradiated, 15 to 20 micron. From the length change by annealing up to 1400 °C results, the change during the annealing shows rapidly shrinkage at 200 to 250°C. In addition, the sample gradually shrink until 1300°C and then start expanding in the higher temperature.
