アブストラクト With the development of knowledge based economy and aging of population, international students have been regarded as an important source of skilled workforce. However, the career development of this cohort in host countries has been paid little attention. This workshop aims to unpack this issue. We pick up Japan and Australia as cases due to a large and increasing number of this cohort. The first presenter will present a model on decision making of international students/graduates in choosing study destination, workplace and place of settlement. She assumes they are influenced by restricting factors (budget, language, visa and family), enhancing factors (ability, career, living environment and etc.) and social factors (policy, economy, system and culture of home and host countries) and verifies it by empirical data. The second presenter will discuss strategies that international graduates have utilised to overcome their limitations to obtain and thrive in their employment. These strategies are synthesised in ‘capitals model,’ which was developed based on relevant literature and an empirical research. The third presenter will discuss communication issues among Vietnamese graduates who pursue employment in Australia. Though communication plays a significant factor in networking and collaboration, such skills represent an area of struggle, anxiety, and inadequacy. The discussion, which draws upon empirical data and relevant discourse, highlights facilities such as understanding of local working culture, active listening and reasoning skills and handling of unfamiliar problems. In the last part, discussant will comment on the presentations and discussion will be opened to the floor.
