Abstract In terms of applying nanostructures for optical nanodevices, planer and symmetric arrangement of “tips” on a particle provides a great advantage to controlling polarization property. However attempt to design and control these behaviors has not yet been reported that to the best of our knowledge. Here we report a novel process for preparing a structure using self-assembly technique, which satisfies such requirements and suitable for optical nano devices. We utilized hydrofluoric acid treatment on the self-assembled monolayer of SiO2 particles (original diameter was 190 nm) after thermal sintering process. The obtained structure had 6 tips arranged symmetrically in six directions, represent the hexagonal packing of the self-assembled two-dimensional colloidal crystal. The surface plasmon resonance of the tip structure was convinced by UV-Vis spectroscopy.
