The aim of this study is to clarify the characteristics of indoor and outdoor living spaces in contemporary Japanese courtyard houses. Analyzing the compositions of facade, and arrangement and visual continuity between courtyards and living rooms, suggested 10 types of compositional schemes. These 10 types include not only closed-type courtyards on the facade, but also courtyards that are partially open to the frontal street. As a result, the various typological characters of indoor and outdoor living spaces are generated by the combination of facade, spatial arrangement and windows.
