Abstract We propose a new method for supplying molten metal to basin in the thin film form with same width as that of large rolls for strip caster in steel making industry. This method can be feasible if we utilize electromagnetic force for the controlling of the cross-sectional shape of molten metal. In our research, the shape of the liquid metal jet under the electromagnetic force action is examined. At first, we conduct the numerical analysis by using index function. We compare the results of numerical analysis and experiments. As a result, both results well agree, and validity of our analytical model is confirmed. Then, we derive an approximate solution based on the momentum theory about the shape change of horizontal jet with or without electromagnetic force. Finally, we extend our approximate model to a generalized model taking account of influence of the gravity. In the analysis, we clarify the cross-sectional shape of the jet falling in the direction of gravity under non-uniform magnetic field. We clear up that the width of the falling jet increases while thickness decreases when the gradient of magnetic gradient becomes strong.
