Abstract Seasonal change in glacier runoff is a major concern for the sustainability of fresh water resources because glacier melt often works as an important buffer for river storage in the dry season. With the ongoing retreat of mountain glaciers, there is an increasing need to predict future change in seasonal runoff from glaciers. However, such assessments are scarce. We therefore project a time series (1955-2100) of monthly runoff from all glaciers located in Central Europe by a glacier model based on the full energy balance equation that includes the effects of supraglacial debris. The model calculates daily mass balance of all individual glaciers located in Central Europe. The debris-covered area and the thermal information of the debris layer are estimated with albedo and surface temperature of multi-temporal Landsat-8 data. The simulations are driven with near-surface temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and downward shortwave radiation from current and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. According to our computations, we show shifts of peak flow month and change in contributions of glacier runoff in each month. These changes in timing and magnitude of glacier runoff could affect regional water resources during the dry summer season as well as the probability of natural hazards occurring.
