Abstract Purpose: Estimation of aircraft maintenance cost is difficult due to complex combinations of variables such like aircraft type, usage, operating environments, etc. This paper aims to identify factors which affect aircraft maintenance costs in common and propose a cost estimation model of aircraft maintenance. Design/methodology/approach: Air transport data from the Bureau of Transport Statistics of the U.S. DOT through 2006 to 2016 are used to analyze the influencing factors of maintenance cost. These data are consolidated with aircraft specification data to create a cost model. An ordinary linear squared method for pooled regression and multi-dimensional fixed effects panel data is used. The model can be applied easily in the field of airline maintenance. Findings: Five explanatory variables, including aircraft age, size and utilizations, are extracted as common factors to estimate the aircraft maintenance costs. We find those variables, which are common to aircraft and/or airlines, explain around 70% of the maintenance costs. Originality/contribution: Maintenance costs present a major portion in the airline operating costs. The proposed parametric model is applicable to passenger and cargo airplanes and will help airlines for simulating their maintenance costs. Three fixed effects (time, airlines and aircraft) are evaluated through multi-dimensional panel data analysis, which gives insights into the external factors that affect maintenance costs of airlines.
