Abstract
Recentlysquare-channelpackedbedreactorswithmicrotomillidimensionsareoftenfoundintheliteratureonprocess intensification. However, its porosity profiles and resultant flow behaviors have been overlooked.Therefore,thisstudyproposestwonewCFDapproachestomodelsuchreactorsrelyingontheaccuratelocalporosityprofilesinthesquarebed.Discreteelementmethodwasemployedtomodelrandompackedbedsofmonodispersesphericalparticlesinsquarechannelswithchannel-to-particlesizeratioof3to10.Theobtainedlateralporosityprofileswereaxiallyaveragedandexpressedasafunctionofdistancefromthewallinthreedefinedzones.MomentumsourcetermtobeaddedinthemomentumconservationequationwascalculatedbasedonthelocalporosityprofilefunctionsinCorrelations-basedContinuum(CC)approach,whileontheaxially-averagedporosityprofilesinPseudo-ParticleResolved(PPR)approach.Thesquarebeds’hydrodynamicbehaviorswereinvestigatedusingCCandPPRapproaches,whichwerevalidatedwithParticleResolvedap-proachintermsofvelocityprofile,andwithempiricalcorrelationsforpressuredrop.
