A new type of solar pumped laser system that has features of high-efficiency and economic by Fresnel lens and Cr codoped laser medium is reported in this paper.
It is an urgent problem to develop new energy sources that can substitute for fossil fuels. In general, the ultimate renewable energy source is the solar energy. However, it is far from fully realized. Since sunlight is available only in the clear daytime, it cannot be the alternative to thermal power stations unless effective and large power storage systems are available.
We proposed the fossil-fuel-free energy cycle where heat and hydrogen energy are produced by a chemical reaction of Mg with water. MgO, reaction residue is reduced to Mg by solar pumped laser for energy reservoir.
In this study, we will report the solar pumped laser system in the fossil-fuel-free energy cycle. Slope efficiency of 11%-14% has been achieved by a solar pumped laser. The laser output of 24.4 W was achieved with a 1.3-m2 Fresnel lens. The maximum output for unit area of sunlight was 18.7 W/ m2 , which is 2.8 times larger than previous results with mirror collectors.
