アブストラクト This paper describes a novel 5-DOF controlled maglev actuator for electrical discharge machining. The actuator is compact enough to be attached to conventional electrical discharge machines. This actuator can not only improve machining speed and machining accuracy, but can also be used to realize micromachining. The developed actuator has better than 1mm positioning resolution, a bandwidth greater than 100Hz in the 5-DOF directions, and a positioning stroke of 2 mm in the Z direction. Moreover, the positioning performance of the maglev actuator during electrical discharge was verified and it was used to produce a hole of f0.6mm.
