The authors report the first example of tungstate-based catalytic fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2). A simple monomeric tungstate, TBA[WO4] (TBA = n-Bu4N+) acts as a highly efficient homogeneous catalyst for chem. fixation of CO2 with arom. diamines, 2-aminobenzonitriles, and propargylic alcs. to give urea derivs. quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones, and cyclic carbonates, resp. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra show the specific interaction of the tungsten-oxo moiety in TBA[WO4] with both CO2 and the substrate. This study also shows the importance of developing bifunctional catalysts which can activate both CO2 and a nucleophile (amines, alcs., etc.). [on SciFinder(R)]
