This paper proposes a novel control system for the shunt capacitor equipped with a series inverter with high compatibility with conventional shunt capacitors. The proposed system damps the harmonic resonance of the distribution grid, as its current is controlled to match the one of the conventional shunt capacitor with series reactor, which is expected not to resonate. However, when the grid harmonic content is too high, the control system changes the behavior of the shunt capacitor, making it possible to avoid its overcurrent. Simulation results verify the high compatibility of the proposed system, by analyzing the behavior of the system when it is connected in parallel with the conventional circuits, and experimental results using a downsized model show that it is possible to change the behavior of the system in order to prevent its overcurrent.
