This paper focuses on a virtual inertia control using energy stored in the dc capacitor of the inverters. The conventional method has difficulty in applying the control to the inverter for HVDC transmission system because the control fluctuates the dc transmission voltage. The authors propose to apply the virtual inertia control to a modular multilevel converter (MMC) to increase the system inertia while maintaining a constant dc transmission voltage. The proposed method is verified by computer simulations when it is applied to the inverter for the HVDC transmission system. The results demonstrate that the HVDC system operating with the proposed method can reduce the RoCoF and the frequency nadir.
