The performance characteristics of the gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) instrument array on board the X-ray astronomy satellite Tenma are described. The energy resolution of the Tenma GSPC array at 5.9 keV is 9.5 percent (FWHM) which is twice as high as conventional instruments. The GSPC array permits channelling of detected X-ray photons into 128 or 256 channels for pulse-height analysis. Channel energy can be set to an accuracy of less than 50 ev. The results of an in-flight test of the accuracy of the GSPC are presented. It is found that the practical detection limit in observations of the Crab Nebula was in the X-ray energy range 2-10 keV.
