アブストラクト
We have re-investigated charge carrier transport properties of the liquid crystal of2-(4’-heptyloxyphenyl)-6-dodecylthiobenzothiazole (7O-PBT-S12) in which the electronic conduction was established firstin the rod-like liquid crystal and the highest hole mobility in the smectic A (SmA) phase ever achieved was reported. Wefound that 7O-PBT-S12 exhibited three crystal phases, one of which appeared in a limited temperature range of 10 degreesjust below the phase transition temperature of the SmA phase. In this crystal phase, non-dispersive transient photo-holecurrents were observed in time-of-flight experiments, and its hole mobility was determined to be 8×10-3 cm2/Vs slightlyhigher than that reported previously in the SmA phase. On the contrary, for the SmA phase, the hole mobility wasdetermined to be 1×10-4 cm2/Vs. Furthermore, we established the electron transport characterized to be the same mobility asthe hole’s in the SmA phase of purified 7O-PBT-S12. On the basis of these results, we correct the previous results in it anddiscuss what determine the charge carrier mobility in the smectic mesophases basically.
