In the near future, long-distance wireless LANs (WLANs) are likely to be the main solution for providing Internet connectivity to isolated rural areas. Although some long-distance WLANs have already been constructed, the basic characteristics for building them remain unclear. In this paper, we investigate the basic characteristics of long-distance WLANs in a real environment and provide the following two contributions. One is the relationship between the characteristics of multiple layers, i.e., physical, MAC, network, and application layers. The other is technical knowledge to construct and evaluate long-distance WLANs. We describe the basic characteristics, possibilities and difficulties associated with constructing long-distance WLANs.
