This paper aimed at investigating the variation of aircraft noise sensitivity among residents living near Fukuoka Airport where its capacity expansion plan is under consideration. A field survey consisting of social questionnaires and headphone experiment was carried out from 15th to 24th January 2011. We introduce two innovative concepts: first is the use of headphone system to assist the participants in evaluating their sensitivity as well as to assess the actual perceived noise level, and second is an application of Prospect Theory (PT) in the aircraft noise context to formulate the loudness sensitivity function-based reference noise level (RNL). Results indicate that the value function examined has properties that are consistent with PT: convex for losses and concave for gains. People are slightly more sensitive to the decrease than to the increase in aircraft noise. Additionally, people become more sensitive to the variation of aircraft noise when their RNLs become larger. Structural Equation Model was also employed to measure the casual relations of the subjective awareness and control over the aircraft noise. It is found that people’s noise acceptance level is affected by several factors including the indoor noise level, convenient accessibility, and satisfaction level toward the government’s noise countermeasures.
